Along with Vadim Cobilas, Andrei was one of two Eastern European signings made by Steve Diamond in 2011. Recruited from French second division side Aurillac, the strapping second-rower was the eighth new forwards recruited by Diamond, who said: "Andrei's a big, athletic lad who's been coached well in France. His desire is to spend some time in England, and he's a hungry lad. He managed to get a passport out of Russia and went to seek fame and fortune through rugby." Following Vasili Artemiev's move to Northampton in March, Andrei was the second Russian to sign a professional contract with an English team.
