Sale Sharks Academy Programmes

Entry into Sale Sharks Academy can be at any stage from 13 to 21 years old, as players can develop at differing times dependent on maturity, skill, physicality and position.

There are three levels that players progress through en route to playing for the Jets (Sale Sharks Academy team) and the Sharks.

We are mindful that players develop at differing times dependent on maturity, skill, physicality and position.

LEVEL 1: The RFU ‘School Of Rugby’ (SOR) Programme

13 - 17 year olds

The SOR programme identifies nominated players between the ages of 13 – 17 by their schools and clubs.

This programme is run by Lancashire RFU and Cheshire RFU, and is supported by professional coaching, assessment and appraisal from Sale Sharks Academy Staff.

This is a skills based programme designed by the RFU to develop talented players’ basic skill level.

LEVEL 2: Elite Player Development Group (EPDG) Programme

14 - 17 year olds

The EPDG programme selects the top players from the SOR programme and other exceptionally talented players from clubs and schools to train at our training facility at Carrington for concentrated rugby development.

We focus on rugby skills, strength and conditioning, speed, agility, nutrition, game analysis and psychological training.

The EPDG is targeted at 14 – 17 year olds. The EPDG is not a team based group. However, we participate in certain RFU tournaments and competitions as a representative of Sale Sharks Academy.

The EPDG is the foundation group from which we will select players to join the full England RFU / Sale Sharks Academy.

LEVEL 3: The England RFU / Sale Sharks Academy Programme

16 - 19 year olds

The England RFU / Sale Sharks Academy Programme selects players aged 16-19 to focus on developing their overall performance – technical / tactical, physical and mental lifestyle, and to prepare them for senior professional and international rugby.

This programme is tailored to on the individual player’s development within a team environment and is supported by principles of long-term athlete development over a period of years.

One of the key features of our programme is a development-led, competition-supported, playing programme in the Guinness A league and our Under 19 fixture list. The Under 19 matches enable us to progress individual development to the benefit of the player and his position.

In addition, the programme gives us the opportunity to assess our potential first-team and International players in a controlled, meaningful, competitive environment.

At Level 3, every player is provided with individual personal development plans that address all areas of development.

Note: Players selected to study academically alongside Sale Sharks Academy training will attend Myserscough College.
