EDF Energy Programme Off To Flying Start

Sale Sharks have been coaching tag rugby in primary schools in the north of Manchester as part of the EDF Energy National Schools Rugby Programme (NSRP). The programme is one of the most comprehensive in world rugby and will involve close to 100,000 nine to ten-year-old boys and girls, along with teachers at primary schools across England. Schools where rugby has never been played before will be targeted. The girls from Cheetham Church of England Community School take a break from tag-rugby to meet Sharky. Jason Robinson, team captain at Sale Sharks, said: "We?re delighted to be involved in the EDF Energy National Schools Rugby Programme. This is about getting children excited and involved in a great sport, and producing the future players and fans of the game. The schools receiving coaching this half-term are Charlestown Community Primary School, Cheetham Church of England Community School, New Moston Primary School and Cheetwood Community Primary School. The programme involves Sale Sharks coaches doing 5 weeks of tag rugby coaching at each school then hosting a festival for them to enjoy, meet Sharky and a couple of the Sharks players. The programme is completely free of charge as EDF Energy generously funds the nationwide programme. Paul Barnes, headteacher at Cheetham Church of England Community School, said: ?We?re delighted to be one of the first schools to take part in the new EDF Energy National Schools Rugby Programme. We all need to encourage children to get active and take part in sport, and tag rugby is a great way to do that.? "The Dawn of a new era"

Sale Sharks open their season with a home match, a 20-year old captain, and under a New Zealand coach. "The Dawn of a new era", states the front cover of the match programme. This evening's news, you might think, but no - the 2000-2001 season started on Saturday 19th August against Bath. The visitors, a power in the land whose squad at the time included Iain Balshaw, Steve Borthwick, Mike Catt, Ben Clarke, Phil De Glanville, Jeremy Guscott, Dan Lyle, Lee Mears, Mike Tindall and Tom Voyce left Heywood Road, having witnessed a late Nicky Little drop goal make the score 33-32 in the home side's favour.

Are you a coach with the 'X-Factor'?

Sale Sharks Academy are looking for strength, conditioning and level 2 rugby coaches who'd like to become better at their chosen interest - and help play a part in the future of Sale Sharks at time same time! We are looking for volunteers who want some work experience and a chance to learn in a successful working Academy environment. We are after strength and conditioning coaches who will work closely with our own conditioners and add input, as well as learning from them to see for themselves what goes on day-to-day at Sale Sharks. This is an invaluable opportunity for them to enhance their experience. Not only will it be a great insight into professional rugby, but it will look impressive on their CV. It will also give them a head start in their chosen field. This will also give us an opportunity to see the person in action as a possible future employee of Sale Sharks.

From Tuesday's Carrington Press Conference

Mike Brewer opened by announcing the appointment of James Gaskell as captain of Sale Sharks for season 2010-2011, saying, "I know it will be a surprise to a lot of people due to James's young age. As far as what I'm looking for in a captain, it's someone to take the club forward in this journey we're about to embark on. He'll be a key player in the squad over the next 3 to 5 years and the biggest trait that I'm looking for is someone perpared to put his body on the line, and someone who won't be asking players to do something he can't do himself.

McMillan in, Harris gone, Thomas selected.

Neil McMillan (flanker, born 15 May 1981) is on trial at Sale Sharks. Neil was educated at Belfast Royal Academy and was part of the BRA Schools' Cup winning team in 1997. McMillan joined Ulster Rugby at the start of the 2001-02 season and has represented Ireland from Schools, U19 to U.21 level. After a frustrating time with a series of injuries in the 2003-04 season, Neil was back in action in the early part of 2004-05, representing Ireland in a number of Rugby World Cup Sevens Qualifying Tournaments in the summer and playing for Ulster until an injury sustained in a pre-season friendly resulted in him needing reconstructive surgery on his knee, ultimately resulting in him winning the Rugby Cyborg Championship. Neil made a successful return to rugby at the start of the 2005-06 season with Ulster, and signed for Harlequins FC in 2008.
