From the Carrington Press Call
Looking ahead to Sunday's Aviva Premiership clash against Saracens, Sale Sharks' Head Coach Mike Brewer announced a first squad of 26 which welcomed back Mark Cueto and Eifion Roberts from injury. "I'm not into rotation," he said. "We're going to take one game at a time. We'll pick the right team to win each game. If we get a bad group of injuries mid-season, we'll re-address the situation, depending on who we're playing, and in what competition. Our emphasis is the Aviva Premiership, second the Amlin Cup, then the Anglo Welsh. It's all about 'Horses for Courses' but every time we go out onto the park, we mean to win.

An invitation to Supporters to sample our 'Celebration' Hospitality
Sale Sharks' supporters are again invited to sample our special 'Celebration' hospitality package at the Aviva Premiership Rugby match versus Harlequins on Friday week, 17th September. This is for the FANS, and is not a corporate-based offer. Judging by the popularity of a similar offering for both the pre-season game against Benetton Treviso and the league season-opener against Newcastle Falcons, interest in this package is likely to be high. Don't delay!

Sale Sharks looking to change luck after five years
Sale Sharks travel to Saracens on Sunday afternoon (kick off 3.00 p.m.) looking to repeat their only success at Vicarage Road, which was almost five years ago! The Sharks' matchwinner that day, Mark Cueto, is back in training after a calf strain and hopes to return to Premiership action at the weekend. With six minutes to go, Cueto was the finisher of an 'end to end' try, interchanging passes with Charlie Hodgson and Richard Wigglesworth 'en route'. Ironically, 'Wiggy' could well be in the opposition ranks on Sunday.

Last Friday evening
Sale Sharks would like to apologise for the unprecedented demand for tickets in the hour before kick-off that led to around two hundred fans gaining entry to the ground after kick off. Despite all ticket windows being in operation queues formed across the car parks. The high number of ticket collections due to bookings in the 48 hours prior to kick off put further pressure on the ticket office.

Nick Macleod - Man of the Match
Nick Macleod, perhaps a surprise selection by Mike Brewer at fly half, deservedly captured the 'Man of the Match' Award in the first-ever game in the Aviva Premiership, not only for his 22 points, but for his control including the kick which set up debutant Tom Brady for his try. Pictured here presenting Nick with his award in the Insider Suite is Gary Price, UK Marketing Director for Aviva.

Sharks give Brewer winning start
Sale Sharks started off their season in successful style against their North Eastern foes, although Head Coach Mike Brewer was the first to admit that everything wasn't perfect, particularly the setpiece and lineout. The home side's pace and intensity won the day and, having regained the lead after 25 minutes, they never looked back and posted a higher points total than they achieved in any match last season. Nick Macleod, pitched in at fly half, responded with a 22-point haul, and took the 'Man of the Match' honours. A penalty apiece left the sides level after four minutes, but Macleod slotted over two more on 10 and 12 minutes to put the Sharks 9-3 up. Manning, the scourge of the Sharks for Munster in a pre-season friendly in 2009, hit a post with a penalty attempt on the quarter hour, putting the home defence in some difficulty. They suffered at scrum time, enabling Brent Wilson to score the game's first try a minute later, Manning converting.

"The Dawn of a new era"
Sale Sharks open their season with a home match, a 20-year old captain, and under a New Zealand coach. "The Dawn of a new era", states the front cover of the match programme. This evening's news, you might think, but no - the 2000-2001 season started on Saturday 19th August against Bath. The visitors, a power in the land whose squad at the time included Iain Balshaw, Steve Borthwick, Mike Catt, Ben Clarke, Phil De Glanville, Jeremy Guscott, Dan Lyle, Lee Mears, Mike Tindall and Tom Voyce left Heywood Road, having witnessed a late Nicky Little drop goal make the score 33-32 in the home side's favour.
