Sale Sharks Community Trust, in partnership with the Lancashire Cricket Board, are launching a brand new 'Crickby' programme, managed by Jo Edwards (Break Thru Officer). The programme aims to encourage participation for Young Adults aged 16 and over in Black Minority Ethnic communities across Manchester.
This is done in connection with the 'Rugby4All' Programme. Rugby4All is backed by the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) to promote diversity and equality in rugby. The programme aims to increase the number of women and girls involved in the sport, to provide better access for disabled people and to promote the game among Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) groups.
Premiership Rugby has been awarded £600,000 by EHRC for the initiative. The grant awarded to Premiership Rugby is part of a £2 million investment from the Government through EHRC into programmes to encourage more women and BME groups to participate in sport.
Minister for Sport, Helen Grant backed the Rugby4All programme at its launch: "It's great that investment will go into growing the game among BME communities - both as participants and coaches. Hosting next year's Rugby World Cup in England gives us a huge opportunity to broaden the appeal of the sport and it's one that we must make the most out of."
At the 'Crickby' event participants will be guided through the activities, where they will be shown both rugby and cricket games. This will give the young adults the opportunity to engage in two sports they may have not experienced before, especially in the game 'Crickby' where the coaches have combined elements of both sports to make a new game, bringing an exciting twist to both games.
The official launch will be held at South West Manchester Cricket Club on Friday 7th August at 7pm where some of the professional players will give guidance to the young adults as well as try the different sport for themselves.
Following this, there will be additional sessions locally to take part in which will be published in due course.
