There was a great buzz around the stadium before kick off, as there always is when the Tiger's come to town. As I took my seat, there were some optimistic fans below me who felt Sale could cause a real upset here. The whistle blew and the game began.
Sale came out all guns blazing, taking the game to the visitors and showing them what they are all about. Within the first six minutes, it was like watching the Sale of last season, which saw their expansive rugby return. A quick lineout was taken before last year's star man, Rob Miller, raced down the line for his first try of the season. Sadly Macleod couldn't add the extras but he soon made up for that by slotting the ball through for a penalty, shortly after. George Ford responded with two penalties of his own. The sharks led 8-6 at half time. They had played some great expansive rugby and there seemed to be a real hunger within the team that had been missing in the past weeks.
The second half kicked off and it was Leicester who started the stronger this time. Two quick penalties and a try from England scrum half Ben Youngs, saw the Premiership veterans take the lead and begin to turn the screw. Yet this didn't stop our boys. The effort that the lads put in was much improved compared to recent weeks and one that didn't go unnoticed by the Sale fans. Sale continued to attack and push for a second try as they threatened time and time again but Leicester's defence was superb on the night.
With a disallowed try for Sale, another successful try for the visitors and a couple of penalties, the game finished 20-8 to Leicester. Sadly there wasn't even a losing bonus point but I know that it was a much better performance from our boys and something that we can build on.
We start our European campaign next with a game against Welsh giants Cardiff Blues. Let's hope we play with the same desire and I'm sure we'll pick up a result.
