With six minutes left of Sale Sharks' LV= Cup match against London Irish last Sunday, Caimh McDonnell, the iconic stadium announcer revealed, "Number 17 James Flynn replaces Number 1 Ross Harrison."
Flynn, who turned nineteen last month, took over at loosehead from Harrison, one year his senior. He was one of three making their first senior appearance for the club - Cameron Shepherd and Tom Cruse were the others - making him the 37th player to be used in the Sharks' eleven matches so far this season.
James was down to travel as a reserve on Sunday morning but stepped up to the replacements' bench when Eifion 'The Fridge' Lewis Roberts was unwell overnight and unfit to travel.
"I was expecting to help with the tackle bags but ended up surprised and delighted when I was told I was on the bench.
"I had a few butterflies beforehand but everybody helped me get over them and 'get stuck in'. Younger lads like myself are included in the matchday party to become accustomed to the larger stadia.
"The only thing that matters if you get on the pitch is to do your job for the team. You acquire an appreciation of how fast and intense it is at first team level. All you can do in your time on the pitch is your best until the final whistle is blown."
Twelve months ago, James was captain at Stockport Grammar School and had played through the junior ranks at Manchester Rugby Club. Whilst still at school, he was involved in several Sale Jets games towards the end of last season. He is currently dual registered with SSE National League 2 North side Stockport RUFC.
Now, he's analysing Sale Sharks' performance against the Irish and preparing for Friday's LV= Cup game at home to Saracens.
Sharks' second game in the LV= Cup will be at home to Saracens next Friday, 16th November, kick off 8.00pm.
