Did you know if you use a generic search engine and type in the phrase "Squeaky Bum Time" you have find a definition that reads 'the tense, final stages of a competition.'
This tells us three things. One, I have too much time on my hands. Two, as does the person who researched that Sir Alex Ferguson first used the phrase in 2003 during the Premiership run in with Arsenal. And three, most importantly, this is a term that I imagine will perfectly sum up the next three months starting with tonight's game. Strap yourself in.
Last weekend's result at London Welsh was huge. I wrote a few weeks ago how priceless a couple of wins in the LV Cup could be for momentum and so it's now turned out, with four wins in a row. The remaining games here at the Salford City Stadium will be crucial as to whether we are enjoying Premiership rugby here again next year. The reigning champions tonight need no introduction, Bath and Gloucester ominously both seem to have found some form recently, whilst Wasps have been rejuvenated under the guidance of Dai Young this season and are challenging for a Heineken Cup place. They'll be twists and turns yet till the end of the season but results at home usually dictate how your season goes.
Welsh go to Irish this weekend and the Sharks have a trip to the Madejski at the end of March, games which I'm sure will include Sir Alex's famous phrase in quite a few of the match reports. Sale have found a winning habit recently, grinding out results since Steve Diamond's return. It might not be good for your heart, make you bite your nails until you reach they skin or leave you wondering why you end up turning up every week, but I for like it. It's better than sitting in 7th or 8th with no chance of getting into the Heineken Cup, safe from relegation and just playing out the season.
At the start of the year I wasn't so sure that the great escape could be on, but with seven games to go and confidence returned, it will be a rollercoaster run in. Enjoy Friday's game.
