He praised both fly-half's Nick Macleod and Joe Ford: "I was delighted with the kicking game of Nick and Joe today. They gave us territory which we needed." He also applauded Eifion Lewis-Roberts, who returned to the pitch for the final phase of the game for a scrum: "When Ross was sinbinned, Eifion came on for the scrum, and he single-handedly drove Gloucester off the ball and won us the penalty. I fully expect the players to buy him a few drinks tonight!"
When asked about a comparison to last season he said: "We can talk about what happened last season but that was last season, we have learnt from it and it is time to move on. We have no targets for this season but to use a cliché we are going to take every game as it comes."
He added "The work that Pete Anglesea, Byran Redpath and Mike Forshaw have done showed today in that we were defensively strong. We had a short close season and players have been preparing for this season in sometimes soaring temperatures."
He also talked about the TMO decisions to award Sale two tries in the game: "The referee was unsure and quite rightly he went to the TMO. He studied both tries frame by frame and he was happy to award them so you can't argue with that can you?"
"If you win all your home games and win the odd away game here and there, you will be a top six side."
