The scheme targets new-to-rugby, non-traditional rugby schools, providing five weeks of coaching and teacher training, grassroots club links, plus resources for the school to continue to play rugby in the future.
Sale Sharks as part of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme have been offering free tag rugby sessions to schools in and round East Manchester over last half term.
All the schools that was involved in the Aviva Premiership Rugby programme received
- 5 weeks of tag rugby coaching from the Sale Sharks community team
- 4 Aviva Rugby Ball each
- 1 set of Aviva rugby tags
- A chance to play at the Aviva Premiership final at half time at Twickenham
The sessions all lead to a tag rugby festival's where the players from each school could try out their new skills. Planned festivals are at East Manchester Academy and Broughton Park Rugby Club
Premiership Rugby sponsors Aviva and Aldwinians Rugby Club also hosted an Aviva Premiership Rugby transition days with local school children from the Region. The event, a crucial part of the Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme, is designed to create long-lasting links between local schools and clubs and eventually unearth the next generation of England rugby stars. The day was led by a number of coaches from Sale Sharks and coaches from Aldwinians Rugby Clubs and offered the youngsters the opportunity to progress from school sport to community sport and more regular participation.
A key part of the programme is to get the teachers in the schools up to speed on how to coach tag rugby so they can add this to their curriculum. A number of teacher's education days have been organised and run by the Sale Sharks Community team.
The teacher's leave the sessions with the knowledge and tools deliver tag rugby successfully and safely to their students, they have resource packs so each year they can deliver the sessions to the new students that come to their schools.
