Myles Marshall Under 15 Sevens
Despite the near freezing weather conditions and strong winds the King's School in Macclesfield hosted their 34th Myles Marshall Sevens tournament at the Derby Fields. The tournament sees some of the best schools in the country battling for supremacy in the shorter format of the game.
Teams from London, Lancashire, Staffordshire, the Wirral, Solihull and Ipswich take to the field to compete for the Cup or Plate. This year, the hosts reached the semi-final stages and were drawn with favourites St Joseph's from Ipswich and it took a 'Golden Try' deep into extra time to separate the teams, with St Joseph's just sneaking it in the end. In the other semi-final Stonyhurst College beat Stockport Grammar School, whilst the Plate competition pitted St Ambrose against Manchester Grammar School. Newcomers to the competition Fallibroome Academy and Abraham Guest School were unlucky not to progress further as both played attacking and exciting rugby.
The Plate Final saw Manchester Grammar crush St Ambrose 31-0, however the Cup final was a tremendous affair. Stonyhurst took the lead with 2 early tries and looked to be on their way to a well deserved victory, however, St Joseph's gradually clawed the lead back and with only 3 minutes to go took the lead with a superbly finished third try, before scoring a fourth deep into injury time. Congratulations must go to St Joseph's, who played a thrilling brand of rugby all day and were deserved winners.
During the afternoon, Rob Miller watched the play offs, chatted to some of the players and then went on to present the prizes to the winning and losing finalists, and also the Plate and Cup Final Man of the Matches.
The player appearance at King's Macclesfield was made possible through their partnership with Sale Sharks, via the Connections scheme, which offers player appearances, season tickets, a signed Sharks shirt, invitations to attend the High Performance Training Centre at Carrington and more. If you would like to find out more about the Connections scheme or how the Sharks Community Trust supports grassroots rugby, please contact their Community Events Co-ordinator, Helen Stuart via email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
