The balmy summer weather and pre-match hype in the Manchester Evening News and on BBC Radio Manchester ensured a good crowd turned up to watch a classic football v rugby cross code challenge as the Sale Sharks Supporters Club and Sale Sharks Community Coaches took on an Altrincham FC Supporters and staff side at the neutral sport of T20 cricket; a match sponsored by Plas Coch to open the Ashley Beer and Food Festival.
Sale made early inroads into the Alty batting with Sharks Community Coach Darren Lamon taking a wicket in the 1st over and a good spell of spin bowling from ex-Sale and England international Hendre Fourie. However as time went on Alty got into their stride and were able to post a highly competitive score of 144 from their 20 overs.
SSSC member Ben Smith and Darren Lamon strode to the crease in confident manner but both returned to the stands in the first over of Sale's run chase. Runs were coming but unfortunately wickets were tumbling as Sale collapsed to 66-8 after 10 overs. Just when all seemed lost, SSSC member Joe Parsonage and Community Coach Andy Broadhurst were able to put on a 20 run partnership which edged us to within 60 runs of our target before Joe was clean bowled. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and for Sale that man was number 11 batsman Paul Garnett who came out and literally smashed the Alty attack all over the field. Boundary after boundary came off Paul's bat to the point that we got to the last over needing just 16 runs to win. Unfortunately despite chants of SAAYYLLLL echoing around the ground Paul couldn't quite pull off the Great Escape as he was run out on the 2nd ball of the over leaving us tantalizingly only 14 short of our target.
Of course it's much easier to accept defeat on a hot summer's night when a beer festival is in full flow and both sides joined spectators in sampling the delightful ales on offer well into the evening.
