Sale Sharks started 2010 in superb style by claiming a 21 – 16 win against Harlequins; the third victory over the London side in just twenty days.
At a freezing Edgeley Park, Sale Sharks put on big effort for a big New Year’s Day crowd. James Gaskell scored a fantastic long range try at the end the first half, whilst Charlie Hodgson scored two penalties and a conversion.
In the second half Hodgson scored another penalty and Ben Cohen added an impressive try for the Sharks.
The last few minutes of the match saw Ugo Monye attempt to score a try for Harlequins but slow-motion replays showed that Monye had been tackled into touch by Hodgson assisted by Kennedy and Cohen and television match official David Matthews disallowed the score.
Kingsley Jones stated, “I'll be honest, I was really worried in the last 15 minutes, it’s no coincidence that Quins finish really strong. But the way Charlie Hodgson made that tackle sums up the way he is playing at the moment. Any flanker would have been proud of that tackle. It's importance is massive."
"I've over the moon with Charlie. I think he's playing the rugby of his life. The tackle just sums up the attitude of the whole squad. The extra one per cent commitment and the spirit we have here showed through."
"He was in the right place and that's what happens when you've got the magic dust. Being in the right place at the right time makes top rugby players.”
