Sale Sharks had a disappointing night at a very wet Welford Road, as the holders Leicester Tigers progressed to the EDF Energy Cup semi finals in Cardiff next March. Luke McAlister, who had kicked a first half penalty, scored a try in the 54th minute to reduce the arrears to 17-8, but two late tries from long distance saw the home side winners by four tries to one.

The driving rain that swept across Central England at tea time didn't miss Welford Road, with puddles forming on the playing surface. At the start, there was a strong wind, but it petered out. Johne Murphy scored a try after three minutes, Goode converting, with Luke McAlister replying with a 12th minute penalty following an offence on Martens by Kay. Much of the first half was a game of aerial kicks, the half backs of both sides testing out the opposing full backs. Goode added a penalty just before the interval. The Sharks' all-white kit had by this stage turned muddy brown.

Ex-England skipper Martin Corry started a move nine minutes after half time, involving Johne Murphy and Sam Vesty before England centre Dan Hipkiss scored Leicester's second try, Goode converting. Sharks scored a well-executed try in the left hand corner after 54 minutes. Smart passing left All Black McAlister clear to score. Charlie Hodgson's attempted conversion shaved the post but didn't add to the score. There was laughter on the hour when Sharks made a triple substitution, with their pristine white kit contrasting with the earthy attire of their colleagues! Tom Varndell was denied a 'try' after the referee deemed Vesty's pass forward, but on 67 minutes it was back to more familiar tactics, the forwards driving after a lineout. The Sharks were penalised in defence, Goode having more luck than Hodgson when his kick hit the upright and went over for three points. With ten minutes left, McAlister had taken over at fly half, but he was involved in the Tigers' third try: a chip was intercepted by Goode, who set Tom Varndell off on a 50 - metre dash. The provider converted. In the last phase, some quick thinking by Tom Croft gave him a decisive dash down the wing for the fourth try after a flat McAlister pass had not borne fruit.

Scoring (Tigers first) 7-0, 7-3, 10-3 (Half time) 17-3, 17-8, 20-8, 27-8, 32-8.
