Inspired by strong displays from centres Luke McAlister and Lee Thomas, Sale Sharks overcame Leicester Tigers in a tense atmosphere on a cold day at Edgeley Park. Since their 2006 Twickenham triumph against the men from Welford Road, Philippe St.Andre's team had lost four encounters against the Tigers; although this was a close affair, the outcome was pleasing for the home side. They leapfrogged their opponents into fourth spot in the table.

A chilly afternoon saw numerous handling errors, chargedowns and untidy passing, with a try apiece and the rest of the scoring coming from the boot. Charlie Hodgson slotted home two penalties on 5 and 10 minutes, with his counterpart Andy Goode replying a minute later. There was little of note until the 27th minute, when Julien Laharrague weaved through midfield. Luke McAlister missed a long range penalty attempt a minute later, but his burst through the centre and chip ahead led to a try claim for Laharrague on the half hour. The TMO ruled that the Frenchman had been held up. Hodgson added third penalty a minute later. Two minutes before half time, the Sharks scored the first try of the game. Andrew Sheridan started the move, which was taken on by Sebastien Bruno before the ball was swiftly moved out wide left for Rory Lamont to score his eighth try of the season. It took the Tigers one minute to reply, an overlap on the left seeing Johne Murphy score in the corner.

Penalties from Goode on 44 and 61 minutes saw the Tigers claw their way back onto level terms at 14-all. The Sharks had spent prolonged spells near the visitors' line, but a lineout lost on their own throw ended a good period of pressure. Hodgson added another penalty - his fourth out of four - after 63 minutes to take his side ahead. Two minutes later, the TMO ruled that Varndell had knocked on before scoring a 'try'. A series of collapses at scrum time led to some frenzied phases of rugby, but the final word came from McAlister. Having been wide with a long-range drop goal attempt on 77 minutes, he thumped home a penalty two minutes later to seal a welcome victory.

Many players from both sides put a huge effort into this game: no quarter was asked or given. The Sharks defended well and slotted over five of their seven kicks at goal. The visitors mustered three from their seven attempts.

Scoring (Sharks first) 3-0, 6-0, 6-3, 9-3, 14-3, 14-8 (Half time) 14-11, 14-14, 17-14, 20-14.
