"The Dawn of a new era"
Sale Sharks open their season with a home match, a 20-year old captain, and under a New Zealand coach. "The Dawn of a new era", states the front cover of the match programme. This evening's news, you might think, but no - the 2000-2001 season started on Saturday 19th August against Bath. The visitors, a power in the land whose squad at the time included Iain Balshaw, Steve Borthwick, Mike Catt, Ben Clarke, Phil De Glanville, Jeremy Guscott, Dan Lyle, Lee Mears, Mike Tindall and Tom Voyce left Heywood Road, having witnessed a late Nicky Little drop goal make the score 33-32 in the home side's favour.

From Tuesday's Carrington Press Conference
Mike Brewer opened by announcing the appointment of James Gaskell as captain of Sale Sharks for season 2010-2011, saying, "I know it will be a surprise to a lot of people due to James's young age. As far as what I'm looking for in a captain, it's someone to take the club forward in this journey we're about to embark on. He'll be a key player in the squad over the next 3 to 5 years and the biggest trait that I'm looking for is someone perpared to put his body on the line, and someone who won't be asking players to do something he can't do himself.

Brewer said, “Mikaele’s agent is Freddy Tuilagi who’s a difficult chap to get a hold of, but he’s in the UK right now - I spoke to him this week so at this stage the visa has not been granted for him.”

Sale Sharks: announcing new captain
Sale Sharks will be announcing their captain for season 2010-11 at 1 p.m. today, Tuesday. Head Coach Mike Brewer has steadfastly played a dead bat to all questions on the subject in the past three weeks, leaving supporters debating the issue. There was no assistance on the club's Press Day photoshoot, when Mark Cueto, Charlie Hodgson and Dwayne Peel were in a central position on the front row. The club was at pains to point out that this was simply because they are three senior players, and because the team group is ordered according to height.

Sharks impress in final rehearsal
Sale Sharks entertained Benetton Treviso at Edgeley Park in their final warm up game before the big Aviva Premiership Rugby kick off against Newcastle Falcons next Friday. Treviso were no mean opponents, and the Sharks regularly incurred the wrath of referee Dave Pearson, who took just eleven seconds to award a penalty for crossing after skipper Gaskell had caught the kick off, which McLean slotted over. The Sharks seemed edgy, but the lightning darts of Peel settled them down. On nine minutes, Sharks went ahead following a deft offload by Tuilagi in a sweet passing move, for the onrushing Williams to finish. Wihongi, on the Edgeley turf for the first time, suffered an ankle injury and was withdrawn. McLean missed a 19th minute penalty chance and on 21 minutes it should have been try two when Brady broke clear. Somehow, the impressive Seymour couldn't ground the ball - possibly his only mistake of the match. Miller added a penalty four minutes later before Seymour made amends with a try to take the score to 15-3. Tonetti had been instrumental in the build up, and several pairs of hands helped the ball to the fair haired flanker before he surged through. McLean scored a penalty to end the half, but the crowd had seen 40 minutes of offloading rugby, with several players posing future selection problems for Mike Brewer .
