The game started in amazing fashion when Johnny Leota, sporting a Mr T style haircut, charged down a clearing kick from Robson, gathered the bouncing ball to touch down after only 58 seconds. Macleod's conversion attempt missed the target though 5-0.
Gloucester hit back on four minutes with a Burns penalty but amazingly two minutes later Dwayne Peel charged down another clearance kick and touched down. Referee David Rose handed it on to the TMO to award the try. Macleod nailed the conversion and after seven minutes Sharks led 12-3.
Sale had a chance to go further ahead with an overlap down the left hand side but were penalised in the ruck and Gloucester cleared the danger.
Freddie Burns reduced the arrears on 14 minutes with a well struck penalty after a frenetic period of play.
Play was held up on 16 minutes when Gloucester Hooker Edmonds was injured and had to be stretchered from the pitch with knee ligament damage.
Referee Rose went to the TMO again on 23 minutes after Mark Cueto was tackled near the line, the ball bounced out and Marc Jones touched down. Was it a knock on or a Gloucester hand that touched the ball last? The TMO said Cueto had knocked on and gave the scrum restart to Gloucester.
The points scored early on dried up but it was nevertheless an entertaining game as both teams wanted to attack. Sharks went 15-6 ahead on 31 minutes with a well struck penalty by Nick Macleod and Freddie Burns had the chance to reduce the nine point deficit a minute later when Dan Braid was penalised but his kick sailed wide.
A minute before the break Cameron Shepherd who was having an excellent all round game skipped around the Gloucester defence to touch down. Referee Rose consulted the TMO and the try was awarded. Nick Macleod converted with the last kick of the half.
Half Time Sale Sharks 22 Gloucester 6
Sale Sharks started the second half as they had finished the first but a good move ended when Marc Jones knocked on near the Gloucester line after several good phases of play.
Sharks carried on attacking relentlessly, looking for the fourth try but were getting frustrated as moves broke down at crucial times.
After 50 minutes Sale started to introduce their replacements with Harrison and Taylor replacing Dickinson and Jones.
Gloucester reduced the arrears on 54 minutes with a Freddie Burns penalty 22-9.Buckley and Vernon were introduced in place of Thomas and Braid before the game restarted and shortly afterwards Amesbury replaced Brady on the wing.
Burns missed a penalty on 58 minutes for Gloucester as they tried to reduce the Sharks lead. Four minutes later Danny Cipriani was introduced as a substitute for Nick Macleod, It was Danny's first game since the LV Cup Final defeat to Harlequins in mid March.
Two minutes after Cipriani's introduction Jonny Leota smashed his way through the Gloucester defence to touch down, but referee Rose handed it upstairs to the TMO. NO TRY but Sharks had a 5 metre scrum and the 8023 crowd roarded on their favourites.
Sharks were camped in Gloucester territory but still the fourth try wouldn't come. Dave Lewis was binned for a deliberate knock on and Gloucester were having to defend for their lives.
The fourth try finally came on 75 minutes when Dwayne Peel who had had a magnificent game saw an opening and raced in for his second try of the game. Cipriani's conversion attempt was narrowly wide but Sharks had scored four tries in consecutive games in the battle for Premiership survival. 27-9
With 24 seconds left on the clock Cipriani put in a majestic chip kick which Cueto gathered and raced in for Sharks 5thtry of a very productive and satisfying evening. Cipriani's conversion attempt fell short but the crowd cheered the Sharks from the field.
