Sale went into the game, with an impressive run of form against the home side with Sharks having won three of their last four games, and in their most recent visit to Adams Park with a 33-30 win in the LV= Cup back in February 2013. On the other hand, Wasps were looking to bounce back following four straight defeats in all competitions.
Joe Carlisle kicked the game off, kicking towards to Dreams Stand in the bright sunshine that was in Wycombe.
The early stage of the game was dominated by Sale, who had the majority of the possession but did nothing of note with it.
After 7mins, Nick Macleod went down after a late tackle by Wasps scrum-half Joe Simpson following a high kick in the air. After consulting the TMO, referee Dean Richards gave the scrum-half a yellow card. Macleod left the pitch for a concussion check-up and Danny Cipriani came on to replace him. Cipriani's first action was to kick for goal from the halfway line, and he got it. It was 0-3 to Sale.
Sale seemed to gain a lot of confidence from taking the lead and they managed to put together a good move on the right wing involving Mark Jennings and Daniel Braid, before the ball being passed out to Cipriani who put a clever kick through towards the left hand touchline in the Wasps 22, but Tommy Bell saw it out of play.
Soon after, Sale scored the first try of the game, thanks to a good break from Mark Cueto on the left wing, who chipped the ball through, Andrea Masi failed to gather on the loose ball, and David Seymour took full advantage of it and picked it up and ran into the 22. He passed it to captain Dan Braid who was by his side and he ran over the try line. Danny Cipriani converted to make the scores 0-10 after 13mins.
Wasps seemed to spark into life soon after this, and had some good periods of possession and they did attack well. That made the scores 3-10 after 19mins.
Wasps attacked once again after kick off, and yet again, Sale's defence was penalised for being offside. Joe Carlisle kicked again for the posts and he got it. It was 6-10 after 21 minutes now.
Since Joe Simpson re-entered the field of play, the home side looked a totally different proposition and after they mauled the ball on 10m, the ball was passed wide and Ashley Johnson thought he had scored a try, but referee Dean Richards said he was held up and awarded a penalty to Wasps. He warned Sale captain Dan Braid, as Joe Carlisle kicked over the penalty to make the score 9-10 after 25minutes.
The Sharks fought back and following a charge down kick from James Gaskell and David Seymour picked up on the loose ball. The Sharks had the scent for their second try of the game and they attacked. Wasps extended their lead soon after, following a high kick from Danny Cipriani, which was gathered by Ashley Johnson, he offloaded to William Helu who passed to Joe Simpson on his inside, who put the after burners on and went over and scored the try. Carlisle missed the conversion to make the scores 17-10 after 50 minutes.
Sharks fought back and scored a try of their own following some absolute magical work from Danny Cipriani on the left wing, who dummied and passed it to Johnny Leota who buried his way over. Cipriani did miss the conversion though. The score was 17-15 after 54minutes.
Sale managed to get a penalty from a scrum and Cipriani went for the posts. He got the kick which made the scores 17-18 after 61minutes.
It was a closely fought battle in the next stage of the game, and Sale applied the pressure at the lineout and the scrum. It was too close to call at that stage.
Following a driving maul, which Wasps managed to steal from the Sharks, the home side went up field and attacked and were soon rewarded as referee Dean Richards penalised Sale on halfway on 67 minutes. Andy Goode stepped up to take the kick, but he missed it as it drifted to the left of the posts.
James Gaskell made a superb break, running directly into the Wasps 22. He tried to sidestep Tommy Bell but he brought Gaskell down, but Sale had the forward momentum, and tried to get the next score. Tom Arscott almost went over the try line following a great step off the right wing, and from the next ruck, the ball was held up.
A 5m scrum was awarded to Sale and they put huge pressure on the Wasps pack and the home side were penalised. Captain Braid opted for another scrum; however Wasps turned over the ball and cleared their ranks.
