The youngest captain in both the history of Sale Sharks and indeed the Premiership, James Gaskell is just 22 but has made a huge impact.

Prior to the 2009/10 season, he had made just four appearances for the first XV, but 12 months later he was crowned the Breakthrough Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year.

This came after he impressed at the 2009 Junior IRB World Cup and brought that form back onto the domestic scene, making 21 appearances for the Sharks.

James is primarily a lock but also plays flanker, having played in the position for both Sandbach School and Rugby Club.

He was named captain by Mike Brewer in the summer of 2010 but injuries limited his appearances by the time he returned from an ankle injury, the Kiwi had been sacked.

His leadership qualities were not just spotted at club level and he has since captained England Saxons, becoming the youngest player to receive that honour in the team’s history.
