A dislocated shoulder cast a huge shadow over Fraser Mckenzie's first season as a Sale player, agonisingly denying him the chance to make his debut for Scotland after he was named in their initial Six Nations squad.

The former Edinburgh lock suffered the injury 57 minutes into the Sharks’ Amlin Challenge Cup defeat by Brive in January, in what proved to be his last appearance of the season.

It was a bitter blow for Fraser as he had been earning rave reviews in the early part of the season and was seen as the long-term successor to the retired Nathan Hines in the Scotland set-up.

He shot to prominence at Edinburgh as a rampaging second row with the ball skills to play a fast and off-loading game.

Originally with Dunfermline, he joined Edinburgh in 2008 from the National Academy after representing Scotland U20s during the IRB Junior World Championship in Wales.

He previously skippered Scotland at the U19 World Championships.
