Probably the most high-profile of the Sharks’ numerous signings in the summer of 2011, Andy Powell arrived at Edgeley Park on a two-year contract, a week after leaving Premiership rivals Wasps by mutual consent.
The Welshman made a hugely positive impression in his first season, joining Rob Miller in being nominated for the Gatorade Game Changer of the Season award and being named Sale’s Newcomer of the Year.
A member of the British and Irish Lions touring party to South Africa in 2009, Andy lists Cardiff, Newport and Llanelli among his former clubs and is a Wales international with over 20 international caps to his name.
His form for the Sharks in his debut season has shown his enormous rugby-playing talent, with teammate James Gaskell comparing his impact with that of former fans’ favourite Sebastien Chabal.
Gaskell said: “Powelly is one of those special players who can turn a game on his own. There are not many players like that in the Premiership and we are very lucky to have him.”
