A huge signing in more ways than just the obvious one, Richie joined the Sharks in the summer, after ending his four-year association with Glasgow Warriors.

Standing 6ft 10in, the lineout specialist headed south to high praise from Steve Diamond, who was delighted to lure the 16-cap Scotland international to his Sale project.

Gray’s arrival was announced after he featured in all four of Scotland’s World Cup matches and along with Danny Cipriani, is one of the marquee signings of the summer .

Diamond said: “Richie is only 22 but has the makings of a world-class forward. He has been courted by three Premiership clubs and several French clubs, but he has bought into our vision at Sale Sharks.”

Richie, who said leaving Glasgow had been the hardest decision he has had to make, added: “This isn’t about money: I’ve always been keen to test myself in England and I feel this is a good opportunity to do so.”
