Cipriani: “Real chance of building something at Sale”

Sale Sharks’ new signing Danny Cipriani was a guest on Talk Sport’s “Keys & Gray” show this morning, and delivered a positive message to the club’s supporters.

Appearing as the star guest during the final hour of what is normally a football-dominated show, Danny Cipriani started by outlining the influence of Margo Wells on his fitness work, describing her as ‘his guru’.

Keys and Gray moved onto his reasons for wanting to play in Australia, and the differences in the game there. Cipriani praised the speed of play Down Under, agreeing that his footwork was helpful to his game.

“I’m 24 and ready to settle down…It starts at Sale,” Cipriani concluded. “Australia has made me more determined to show the strings to my bow.”

Questioned about his ambitions, Cipriani revealed that he was looking forward to helping Sale Sharks achieve their potential alongside future colleagues, aiming to rise from last year’s sixth place in the Aviva Premiership to fourth or better.

Inevitably, in view of Danny’s high profile relationships with female celebrities, the talk veered towards Danny’s media coverage in the past, with Cipriani maintaining that he was not a drinker, and that when he was in a London restaurant, photographers assembled to picture his departure. When asked, “Are you a rugby player or a celebrity?” the player emphatically replied, “A rugby player … I have to get out of the spotlight and try to promote the sport in a professional way.”

Cipriani spoke highly of Steve Diamond’s qualities, mentioning his combination of “old school mentality and new professionalism. “I felt a real sense of backing and understanding from Steve Diamond and owner Brian Kennedy. There’s a real chance of building something at Sale.”

He concluded with this message: “It’s going to be a difficult challenge.”

Danny, who commences training with his new club on July 9th, is obviously looking forward to his next move and raised a laugh when attempting a Northern accent to say, “I’ll have to get used to chips and gravy.”
