Heineken Cup Fixtures Announced

Find out who Sale Sharks will be playing in the group stages of the Heineken Cup

The ERC have announced the pool fixtures of this season’s Heineken Cup.

Here’s who Sale Sharks will be competing against in Round 1 to 6 of the Heineken Cup:

Sale Sharks will start their Heineken Cup group with a home fixture against group top seeds Cardiff Blues. The game will be played at the new Salford City Stadium on Sunday 14th October, kicking off at 12:40pm. The game will see Andy Powell and Nick Macleod reunited with their former team mates. Sharks have met The Blues twice before, with all meetings resulting in a home victory. In the last meeting at Edgeley Park, Sharks beat Cardiff 27-26, with James Gaskell being named man of the match after a tremendous performance. Andy Powell featured in that game for the opposing side and grabbed himself a try as well as ten minutes in the sin bin.

Round 2 sees Sale Sharks travel to France to play Montpellier on Sunday 20st October with kick off at 4pm local time. The last time Sale played Montpellier away, both sides racked up 14 points. A Luke Mcalister penalty kick at goal, agonisingly clipped the top of the post, snatching a famous victory from the Sharks grasps. The only two players still with the club, who played in that game, are Mark Cueto and Eifion Lewis Roberts.

The back-to-back games in December will see Sharks play against Toulon. There are several links to the Toulon club despite Sharks having never played the French side before. Former Director of Rugby Philippe Saint Andre, joined Toulon from Sale and recruited several ex Sharks including Juan Lobbe, Rory Lamont, Sebastian Bruno and Dean Schofield. To add more excitement, Andrew Sheridan also joined Toulon in April and Eifion Lewis Roberts left the French club to re-join Sale Sharks this season. Adding further celebrity status to this highly anticipated meeting, is England 2003 World Cup hero Jonny Wilkinson, who still plays for Toulon.

The home leg will be played at the Salford City Stadium on Saturday 8th December, kicking off at 3:40pm and the return leg will be played Sunday 16th, kicking off 4pm local time.
