World Rugby has announced the shortlists for the prestigious Men’s and Women’s 15s Player of the Year awards for 2018, which will be presented at the World Rugby Awards in Monte Carlo on 25 November.
De Klerk has been a revelation since joining Sale Sharks Sharks in the summer of 2017. With his lightening pace and ferocious defence he quickly became a fan favourite which culminated in him winning the Supporter’s Player Of The Season award. He went on to win the Try Of The Season accolade at the Together end of season awards last May and was nominated as one of five players to win the Premiership rugby player of the year award.
The scrum-half’s performances since joining the club led him to being recalled to the Springboks squad. He has starred in the summer internationals against England and played every minute of South Africa’s Rugby Championship campaign as they finished second and claimed a memorable victory against the All Blacks in New Zealand.
In response Sale Sharks has commissioned a 14ft bronze statue to stand outside the famous AJ Bell Stadium in Salford.
In reaction to the announcement world renowned Scrum Half De Klerk was thrilled to hear the news, he commented:
“To be recognised by the club in this way with a permanent statue of myself is truly humbling. To receive the same recognition as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mo Salah is unbelievable and I cannot wait to see the artwork in place at the AJ Bell Stadium at our next home fixture against Northampton Saints on the 24th November!”
