Department: Sale Sharks Foundation

Reporting Too: Chair of trustees and fellow board members

Renumeration: This is a voluntary role, although reasonable expenses may be claimed.

Time Commitment: Four formal Board meetings per year, including the AGM. These are a mixture between online and in person meetings. Online Sub-Groups (Finance, Risk and HR) are also held four times per year.Liaison with the CEO and other team members, as necessary.

The role of the Board of Trustees is to provide a crucial part of the governance arrangements for Sale Sharks Foundation, which is established both as a Charity and a Company.

Trustees are required to be objective and to challenge, and to do so in a constructive and supportive way – they should be ‘critical friends’ of Sale Sharks Foundation.

In addition to being able to fulfil the generic responsibilities described in the Role Description below, applicants with skills and/or experience in one of the following areas are particularly encouraged:

Provision of services and programmes linked to: children and young people; active ageing; health and wellbeing; education; disability activity or social inclusion.

Commercial sponsorship and fundraising.

Working in the charity sector, Marketing, branding, PR and social media


Sets, maintains and monitors the Vision, Purpose and Values for Sale Sharks Foundation, aligned with its charitable objects.

Supports the development of, and approves, the strategy for Sale Sharks Foundation.

Acts as an ambassador for Sale Sharks Foundation, protecting its reputation and promoting its activities within the communities it operates, to current and prospective funders and other stakeholders.


Ensures that Sale Sharks Foundation defines its goals within an annual plan, and evaluates its performance against agreed targets. Supports the Senior Leadership Team to obtain the necessary financial, people and other resources to ensure the successful achievement of the annual plan.

Selects and supports the CEO, and other Senior Leadership Team members. Oversees appropriate HR practices, including the recruitment, development, assessment and remuneration of staff, in a supportive organizational culture.

Establishes a framework of policies and procedures, so that the activities of Sale Sharks Foundation are controlled, and risks are mitigated.

Where appropriate, take a lead role for a specific area of the work of Sale Sharks Foundation based upon the Trustee’s individual skills, interests and experience. This may involve working with operational team members to review, monitor or develop areas of work of the Foundation.


Ensures that Sale Sharks Foundation complies with its Articles of Association, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

Receives and reviews regular reports describing the full range of Sale Sharks Foundation activities, including the associated outcomes and assessments of impact.

Maintains the financial assets of Sale Sharks Foundation, with appropriate controls, checks and balances, scrutinizing regular management accounts and publishing an annual report and accounts.

Regularly assesses Sale Sharks Foundation’s Risk Register, which captures all relevant risks, the actions required to mitigate, and ensures that all risks are managed within agreed tolerances.

Contributes to the effective performance of the Board, such that the Trustees form a proactive and supportive team acting in the best interests of Sale Sharks Foundation.

In addition to membership of the Board, Trustees will be invited to join one, or more, of the Board’s Sub-Groups: Finance, Risk and HR.

It is hoped the successful candidate will take up the post at the Foundation’s Trustee meeting on June 13th 2024 in Person at Sale Sharks High Performance Centre.

The successful candidate will undergo an enhanced DBS check as is important to the organisation when Safeguarding of Adults and Children & Young people is such a core part of our role.
