Sale Sharks Women suffered heavy home defeat against Exeter Chiefs Women in round 10 of the Allianz Premier 15s

Exeter have proved tough opposition for Sharks so far this season. On rain-softened Corpacq Stadium turf, today’s fixture did not buck this trend.

However, there was cause for early optimism from Sharks – an impressive scrum performance saw Exeter penalised twice early on alongside several infringements at the breakdown. Even after Exeter’s first try from a sturdy Jennine Detiveaux hand-off, the momentum of the game remained fluid.

Sharks first and only try of the game came with the run of play – opting twice for the penalty scrum, Vicky Irwin eventually burst over the whitewash in energetic fashion before levelling the score at 7-7 with a well taken conversion.

In pendulum-like fashion however momentum quickly swung back to Exeter who wasted no time thundering up the field though penetrating runners before scoring through Rachel Johnson just before the break. Patricia Garcia added the extras from the tee.

The second-half told a different story, with Exeter exerting themselves comprehensively from the off. Chief’s third came through the rolling maul which Sharks pack were unable to nullify for the duration of the game. Laura Delgado scoring the converted try.

Soon after, a trademark-Exeter pick-and-go effort saw Linda van der Velden cross for her side’s fourth, but this time Garcia could only hit the post.

Sharks defence was under intense pressure, exacerbated after a yellow card to Molly Morrissey for failing to retreat 10 metres after a penalty was conceded. Sharks’ woes were compounded as hooker Emily Tuttosi scored immediately after.

Exeter had truly upped the tempo and began to make significant metres from quickly taken penalties.

As Sharks committed numbers to salvage the breakdown battle, gaps opened up in defence, Merryn Doidge finding one of these and arcing through to score as the game approached its end.

Exeter earned their seventh and final try though another quickly taken penalty, Brooke Bradley trickling through Sharks’ broken defence to score.

A tough result for Sharks who lost their grasp on the game in the second period despite dominating at the scrum.

Sale Sharks Women’s next game is away to Gloucester-Hartpury on Saturday 15 January.
