Ann Ford & Jamie Louise Massey

Among the thousands of passionate supporters filling the stands at Sale Sharks rugby matches, there are individuals whose extraordinary actions and inspiring stories stand out. Whether they’ve overcome significant challenges, made remarkable contributions to their community, or achieved great personal milestones, these fans remind us that you never know who might be sitting next to you at a Sale Sharks match.

We are taking time to interact with such people and are asking some questions, but overall allowing them to tell their story to a much bigger audience. Today we are going to share the story of two friends who became Sale Sharks fans and what the club now means to them.

What inspired your love for rugby and particularly for Sale Sharks?

Ann: My journey with Sale Sharks began in December 2022, quite by chance. I had the opportunity to fly the team down to Toulouse for their Champions Cup game. Despite never having seen a rugby game before, I was invited to the match by Simon and had an incredible weekend. I felt like part of the team and have been hooked ever since. Now, I attend as many games and events as possible to support the team and give back.

Jamie: It was actually my friend Ann who introduced me to rugby. She invited me to a game, and from that moment, I was captivated. I started attending more matches until I eventually got a season ticket. Now, I eagerly look forward to every game!

How has being involved with rugby positively impacted your life?

Ann: Rugby has given me something to look forward to during the winter months. I discovered that many of my colleagues are also Sale supporters, and we try to attend as many games together as we can. The club’s interaction with fans is amazing; a tour of Carrington on my birthday was a highlight.

Jamie: Growing up, I never really had a hobby, but now rugby fills that gap. It gives me something to look forward to, especially during the cold, dark winter days. It has also helped me meet many new people and visit places I might not have otherwise.

How does the Sale Sharks Foundation’s work in promoting rugby and community engagement resonate with you personally?

Ann: A friend’s daughter was introduced to rugby at school through the Foundation and now loves the sport. She even played on the pitch at half-time during a Sale game last season. Without the Foundation, this might not have been possible.

Jamie: I am deeply inspired by the Foundation’s work and the lives they impact. I always try to support Gus and the team as much as I can, especially since they helped me pull off an awesome birthday surprise!

Can you share a memorable experience or story related as a Sale Sharks supporter?

Ann: After flying the team to Toulouse, Mike Forshaw kindly gave out his number and offered to arrange tickets for any of us who wanted to attend a game. I contacted him for the return Toulouse game, and he kindly got tickets for me. This experience turned me into a season ticket holder. I brought Jamie to the first game of the next season, and now she is also a season ticket holder.

Jamie: The most memorable experience for me was our recent trip to Toulouse. Flying out with the team, exploring a new place, and watching an away game with such an incredible atmosphere, along with many other fans, is something I will never forget.

This is just one of many stories we will tell throughout the season hoping to inspire future generations of Sale Sharks fans.
