Girls Tackle Rugby
The aim of this programme is to develop a strong women and girls’ strand to the work of Sharks Community Trust. This will provide an important link to the new Sale Sharks’ Women’s team and will help encourage more girls across the North West to take up rugby in general which will in turn create an ongoing talent pool for Sale Sharks Women and the proposed new Centre of Excellence.
Overall, the programme will work with 10 clubs across the region, alongside 40 primary and secondary schools and approximately 3000 participants overall.
How the programme will run
The programme will be split into four strands;
Sustaining our game. This strand of the programme will be aimed at helping some of our local clubs that have girls’ teams sustain their teams by driving interest from girls at local high schools that may not play rugby. We will work with two feeder schools for each club, delivering a six-week programme for girls in Y7-9 plus an out of school evening session.
Growing our game. This strand will look at clubs which have growing and emerging girls’ teams but that are not yet fully sustainable due to current low numbers. We will work with two feeder schools for each club, delivering a 12-week programme for girls in Y7-9 plus an out of school evening session each week. A further number of transition events would be held at the local rugby club to help the girls feel comfortable attending.
Developing our game. This strand will aim to develop new girls’ teams in clubs that have shown some interesting in establishing a girls’ team but have never been able to get one off the ground. We will work with two feeder schools for each club, delivering a 12-week programme for girls in Y7-9. As with the growing our game programme, an out of school evening session will be held each week and a further number of transition events would be held at the local rugby club to introduce the club to potential new players.
Enjoying our game The final strand of the programme will help to increase interest in rugby and Sale Sharks through delivering the current Find Your Brave mental wellbeing programme to two feeder schools to each of the 10 clubs that this overall programme would work with (20 primary schools in total). This would help extend the partnership with Place2Be whilst they remain as Sale Sharks’ charity partner in 2021.
