JAMES PHILLIPS AGREES CONTRACT EXTENSION WITH SALE SHARKS

Sale Sharks are pleased to announce that Second-Row James Phillips has signed a one-year extension to his contract which will keep him at the AJ Bell Stadium until then end of the 2020/21 Gallagher Premiership Season.

31-year-old James joined the club from Bath at the start of last season on a two-year deal, but after a string of impressive performances for Sale during the 18/19 Season, the club has extended James’ contract by a further year which will take him to 2021.

An integral part of the Sharks pack last year, the 6ft 4” powerhouse provided much needed ballast in the forwards throughout the season. The former Bristol and Exeter Chiefs man made a total of 30 appearances for Sale in his first year at the club and cemented himself into the matchday 23 after instantly impressing Steve Diamond upon arrival.

Commenting on the announcement, James said, ”I’m delighted to have extended my contract with Sale, I have really enjoyed my first year at the club. It’s a fantastic environment and Dimes is building a great culture here, we have made some fantastic signings in the pack for the new season so I’m looking forward to building on the progress we made last year with the new boys that are coming in. The supporters here at Sale are second to none, and I can’t wait to get back to the AJ Bell, especially playing against some big teams in the Champions Cup – That’s where every player wants to be.”

Director of Rugby Steve Diamond added, “James has been a revelation since signing last year from Bath. He served his time well at his previous clubs and has really come into his own since joining us, he’s been consistent throughout the year across his entire game and has really improved our go forward within the pack. He’s played thirty games for us this year! That’s more games than he has played at any club in the last 5 years, so it’s a real testament to his drive, work-rate and commitment.”
