A key part of our Northern Force campaign is raising money to support the Christie Charity and their fundraising towards a brand new, state of the art scanning centre, as well as our very own Sale Shark Foundation work.

At the Middlesex Sevens in 1936, the proceeds from tickets, parking, programme sales and ‘all other receipts’ went to the Middlesex Hospital Cancer Fund and new equipment costing around £30,000. We want to mirror this in 2026 and beyond and support a hospital in Manchester which is the largest single site cancer centre in Europe and the first in the UK to be accredited as a comprehensive cancer centre. We will be raising money over the coming 12 months through different activities to help support the great work of the Christie.

The current CT department at The Christie was built in 1980. Back then, it saw just 20 patients a day. Over the years, this has increased dramatically.

Once built, the new scanning centre can better meet the needs of Christie patients, meaning more space for cancer patients and their loved ones, and new high-tech equipment.

The plans include building a new suite to house an advanced 4D CT scanner. This scans faster and more accurately, showing the location and movement of the tumour and how it may affect nearby organs. It can help minimise the impact of radiation on healthy tissue and allow them to target cancerous cells more precisely. But the 4D CT scanner simply won’t fit in the current space.

The advanced 4D CT scanner will enable Christie clinicians to scan more patients than ever before, and in less time. Scanning and imaging plays a vital role throughout a patient’s whole cancer journey. Nearly all patients will have a CT scan at some point during their treatment – to diagnose cancer, monitor tumours, and guide further tests or treatments.

With a faster and more accurate scanner, patients won’t have to wait as long for their scans. This means they can start treatment sooner, and this can be a weight off their minds.

Help us build The Christie’s new scanning centre and start improving cancer patients’ experiences.
