Sale Sharks and Bath players will mark World Down Syndrome Day 2026 at the CorpAcq Stadium on Sunday afternoon by running out in odd socks.
People with Down’s syndrome have an extra copy of the sock-shaped 21st chromosome, and to raise awareness of the genetic condition, the Down’s Syndrome Association launched the ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign.
Sharks’ women’s players wore odd socks – one home and one away – as they won their fifth successive PWR game against Bristol Bears last Sunday.

And this coming Sunday, international stars like George Ford, Tom Roebuck, Luke Cowan-Dickie, Finn Russell and Ben Spencer will do the same for the Gallagher PREM fixture in support of this year’s World Down Syndrome Day (Saturday 21st March).
As they take the field shortly before kick-off, they’ll be joined by Sharks’ Down syndrome team – the Sharks Crusaders Fin Club – which was launched in 2020.

This is the sixth time Sharks have thrown their support behind the ‘Lots of Socks’ campaign by wearing odd socks in a high-profile fixture, demonstrating the club’s and Foundation’s ongoing commitment to make sure that everyone has the opportunity to play rugby.

A huge part of that commitment is the Crusaders team, which was named in recognition of Sean Browne, who played for the team until his death. His favourite team was the New Zealand Super Rugby side, the Crusaders.
The Down syndrome rugby sessions, sponsored by MBNA and delivered by Sale Sharks Foundation, take place every other Sunday at Sharks’ Carrington training ground.
Abi Dean, CEO of Sale Sharks Foundation, said: “Being part of this matchday for World Down Syndrome Day means so much to the children and young people involved. It offers a brilliant opportunity to showcase their talents, champion inclusion across our community, and demonstrate the Foundation’s commitment to making rugby a space where everyone belongs.
“With the continued support of MBNA, our Crusaders Fin Club has become a welcoming environment where young people with Down syndrome can build confidence, enjoy rugby and form lasting friendships. It also brings families together, creating a supportive network rooted in shared experiences.
“We’re hugely appreciative of the club’s backing and look forward to marking this fixture with the community and wider Sale Sharks family on Sunday.”
