MATCH REPORT | HARLEQUINS 17 v 26 SHARKS

Your Sharks secured their place in the last eight of the Investec Champions Cup and a trip to Dublin to face Leinster after overcoming a resurgent Quins side in the second half.

Leading 0-16 at the break and in full control, Alex Sanderson’s men looked on course for a comfortable win, but a brace of late tries from Quins skipper Alex Dombrandt threatened to bring the Londoners back into the game.

But led by player of the match George Ford, Sharks held out to move into the last eight and earn themselves a chance to play at the Aviva next Saturday (KO 5.30pm).

Sharks made a confident start under the lights at The Stoop but both sides missed good chances to grab the first try, with Quins held up over the line before Sharks flanker Jacques Vermeulen dropped the ball with the line at his mercy.

It took 20 minutes for the first points to be scored, with Ford slotting a penalty from in front of the posts. The Sharks fly-half added two more and by the half hour mark, the visitors led by nine.

A nine point lead became 16 before half-time when, with Quins down to 14 after Will Evans was sin-binned, Luke Cowan-Dickie rumbled over at the back of a line-out maul and Ford converted.

Quins thought they had one back moments later as Nick David looked to have scored in the corner, but after a TMO check, referee Luc Ramos ruled that his foot had been in touch.

Sharks began the second half on the front and they extended the lead to 19 when Ford added his fourth penalty.

But roared on by a partisan crowd, Quins fought back and opened their account in the 48th minute when Chandler Cunningham-South powered his way over in the left corner.

Back came Sharks and after a series of phases near the Quins line, Cowan-Dickie dived over for his second. Quins flanker Jack Kenningham was yellow-carded for an offence in the build up.

With a numerical advantage Sharks seemed in control, but back came Quins again, scoring their second when Jarrod Evans created a gap for Dombrandt to score.

The same duo combined for their third, as Dombrandt pounced on a loose ball after a cross-field kick to touch down. Marcus Smith’s conversion slipped wide leaving it 17-26 with 13 minutes remaining.

But the hosts were unable to reduce the deficit further in the closing stages and Sharks marched on to a last eight clash with Leinster on Saturday.
