INTRODUCING: HARRY MACKENZIE
Ahead of the new season, Sale Sharks launched a campaign to celebrate and champion northern artistic talent. Ahead of each home game in the Gallagher PREM a different local artist will commission a unique piece inspired by that fixture and that piece will feature in the match promotion.
The pieces will be used across both the men’s and corresponding women’s home league fixtures.
Providing the artwork for our opening Gallagher PREM fixture of the new season is 23-year-old HARRY MACKENZIE from Altrincham.
Taking inspiration from the game’s physicality and aggression, Harry’s distinctive blue and orange piece will provide the backdrop to gameweek.
“I heard about this project and thought it sounded like a brilliant brief,” Harry said. “I’ve recently graduated and I’m trying to get my work off the ground so it was something I really wanted to get involved in.
“My work is illustration-based and focused on people. It’s mostly hand-drawn but then I try and enhance it digitally.
“For this project, I was instinctively drawn to the players. They have a really unique build and physical appearance and I wanted to use that. I wanted to capture their aggression and physicality and I wanted to add to that with typography.
“All the colours have to make sense and mean something so it was important to use the right blues. I also love including extra, more subtle details, like the rugby posts in the ‘A’ of Bears. I enjoy the editorial side of art and I want my work to tell a story and have a narrative.
“I am a Sharks fan and the first rugby match I can ever remember watching was a Sale game. My dad is massively into rugby so I’ve always had rugby around me, but I’ve probably got more into it in the last few years watching the Red Roses and then getting back into following Sale.
“I’ve tried to watch as many games back as I could to get inspiration for this piece.
“I want to take my art as far as it can go. I’m at the start of my career now and I’m putting everything into it.”
