International stars named Sharks Women co-captains

International stars Lauren Delany and Georgie Perris-Redding have been named co-captains of Sale Sharks Women ahead of the 2022/23 Allianz Premier15s season.

Ireland winger Lauren and USA flanker Georgie take over the role after previous skipper Beth Stafford joined Bristol Bears in July.

Sale Sharks Women get their season underway this Saturday (September 17) with an away fixture against Bristol Bears in the Allianz Cup.

And Sale Sharks’ Women’s Performance Coach Rachel Taylor says both players are perfectly suited to lead the team into the new campaign.

She said: “We’re really pleased to have both Lauren and Georgie on board as co-captains for the season ahead.

“We are fortunate here at Sharks to have an extended leadership group to both learn from them and support them. Each brings a unique skill set to the group, and are very well respected among the team and club.

“We believe collectively that they offer a formidable combination of passion, professionalism, enthusiasm and experience in captaining this team through an exciting year.”

Lauren earned her first Ireland caps aged 28, starting at full-back against England in the 2019 Women’s Six Nations, and joined Sharks Women the following year.

A trained sports nutritionist, she has recently taken up a role as Performance Nutritionist for Sale Sharks’ men’s and Academy teams.

She said: “I’m very proud to captain the team this year alongside Georgie. Sale Sharks is such a powerhouse of rugby in the North West, and it’s an honour to take on the role within the club.

“It’s an exciting time to be a Shark and we’re both looking forward to leading this great group of women to our best season yet in the Allianz Premier15s.”

Georgie, who combines playing with working for the Sale Sharks Foundation, joined Sharks Women when the team was formed in 2020. She made her debut for the USA in 2022.

She said: “I am honoured to co-captain Sale Sharks Women alongside Lauren this season.

“I am proud to have been involved with this team right from the beginning, we have a special group of players and I truly believe we are building towards something special. I look forward to the season ahead.”
