Sharks Women sign Castellucci

Sale Sharks Women have signed Spanish international forward Carmen Castellucci from PWR rivals Gloucester-Hartpury.

The versatile 22-year-old, who is equally happy in the second or back-row, joined the Cherry & Whites from French side AC Bobigny 93 ahead of the 2023/24 Premiership Women’s Rugby season.

She now becomes the second Spaniard at Sharks, joining fellow international Alba Capell in Tom Hudson’s squad.

A keen basketball player as a child, Carmen started her rugby career in Spain with CR Cisneros, before leaving her home nation to play abroad. A spell in France followed before she moved to England and the PWR.

Carmen said: “I’ve spent quite a bit of time in Manchester and I love it. I enjoy the atmosphere and the lifestyle and I’m looking forward to getting to know the city.

“I know the team haven’t had the results they deserved or wanted over the past couple of years but the resources, the ambition and the potential are all there for us to build something special.

“It’s a massive positive for us to have the men’s and women’s teams in the same building so we can share experiences and advice.

“I know (new Sharks Women scrum coach) Luke Stratford already from my time at Gloucester and I’m really looking forward to working with him and the rest of the coaching team.”

Sharks Head Coach Tom Hudson said: “I haven’t worked with Carmen before but I know she’s a fantastic person and a brilliant player.

“Physically she’s very impressive and she’ll add a lot of power to our team. She should get our scrum and our maul going forwards.

“Gloucester-Hartpury have been one of the very best sides in the world for the past few years and the experience she’ll bring from that environment will be invaluable to this young group.”
